What is your theoretical approach?

Due to my experience in various settings, I have developed an eclectic approach, which consists of a combination of CBT, DBT and psychodynamic therapies.

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT)

  • A widely used therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is a structured and goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress or interfere with their well-being.  CBT is evidence-based and has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and more. It is typically a short-term, focused therapy, with sessions lasting about 45-60 minutes.

   2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that was initially developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted and found effective for treating various other mental health conditions, including mood disorders, self-harm behaviors, substance abuse, and eating disorders.  DBT was created by Dr. Marsha M. Linehan, and it combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with concepts from dialectics, which involves the integration of seemingly contradictory elements.

   3.  Psychodynamic Therapy

  • Psychodynamic therapy aims to explore and understand the root causes of an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is based on the idea that unconscious processes, shaped by early life experiences and relationships, influence a person's current functioning. The concept of root causes in psychodynamic therapy is closely tied to the exploration of these underlying, often hidden, factors that contribute to psychological issues.

    4.  Trauma-Informed Care:

  • Trauma-informed care is an approach to providing support and services that recognizes and responds to the widespread impact of trauma on individuals. It involves understanding the potential effects of trauma on a person's physical, emotional, and mental well-being and integrating this awareness into all aspects of care delivery. The goal of trauma-informed care is to create an environment that promotes safety, trust, and empowerment, fostering the healing and resilience of individuals who have experienced trauma.

What happens in therapy?

Therapy sessions vary depending on an individual’s goals and desired outcomes. Some clients like short-term counseling with targeted interventions whereas others would like to discuss week-to-week events.

First Session:  An initial assessment is completed, during which I will gather information about your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. I may inquire about relevant personal history, family dynamics, medical history, and any previous experiences with therapy or mental health treatment.

Targeted interventions: You and I will collaboratively design a treatment plan. Each session will be structured to examine and target specific areas of functioning, thought processes that may be impacting the self or ways you're operating in the world.

Processing week to week: This type of therapy is typically more in-depth and slower. You come with experiences you’ve found significant and we examine your feelings & reactions. Over time, together, we are able to identify patterns that will bring self-awareness, recognize problem areas, and create intrinsic motivation for change.

Does therapy work?

Psychotherapy provides numerous benefits, including increased self-awareness, improved coping skills, enhanced communication, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. It empowers individuals to break unhealthy patterns, build resilience, and clarify goals and values. Therapy offers vital support during life transitions, reduces isolation, and contributes to the maintenance of good mental health  Make your mental health a priority and call me today!
